The Hungry Dark by Jen Williams

Jen Williams' latest book presents a captivating premise featuring a fake psychic with a mysterious past that resurfaces, leading her to the body of a missing child. The narrative explores the intriguing world of psychic phenomena, delving into the privacy pitfalls of social media and the ethical dilemmas faced by those exploiting vulnerable individuals. The sci-fi element of premonitions adds an extra layer of intrigue, intertwined with a present-day mystery involving a serial killer. Despite these individually compelling elements, the story's cohesion falters, hindering their full development. An entertaining read, though Ashley's family dynamics feel contrived and detract from the overall believability.

Holmes, Marple & Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First CenturyHolmes, Marple & Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First Century by James Patterson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

After years without a James Patterson read, this one intrigued me with characters named Marple, Holmes, and Poe. While enjoyable, it lacked an overarching high-stakes case, feeling more like short stories in alternating chapters. Small nods to the originals, like Baskerville the dog and receptionist Virginia, were appreciated. I favored Marple, though her age remained unclear. Holmes and Poe needed more depth beyond their interests in cars and weapons. Naming one character after Patterson himself seemed odd, and the cases lacked surprising twists. A fun but not seriously gripping read.

Bombmaker by Daniel J. Davies

BombmakerBombmaker by Daniel J. Davies
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In Daniel J. Davies' compelling literary work, "Bombmaker," the story unfolds like a great movie, delving into the intricacies of strained relationships and layers of deception. Introducing Emma Ripley, a great interrogator, on an unyielding quest to discern an imminent terror threat, Davies crafts a tale that exudes sophistication, skillfully weaving a network of connections that immerses readers in the complex lives of the characters, with a particular focus on the profound bond between Emma and Fadi.

Fadi, once seemingly ensconced in an idyllic family life, takes a dramatic turn by attempting self-destruction, an act from which he miraculously emerges alive. Davies skillfully elicits empathy for Fadi, transcending the mere physical toll of his injuries to reveal his unwavering devotion to his family, providing readers with a nuanced understanding of his perspective and an appreciation for life's simpler joys.

Despite the glaring disparity in the lives of Emma and Fadi, a shared undercurrent of discontent binds them, emanating from the wreckage each has left in their respective wakes. Emma's relentless pursuit of answers, coupled with the challenges of navigating divorce and single parenthood, amplifies the heartbreak of her circumstances. Within the isolation inherent in her professional responsibilities, the allure of transgressions remains a subdued yet ever-present temptation.

While "Bombmaker" excels in its nuanced exploration of the characters' lives, there exists a real desire for a more direct examination of the central theme concerning suicide bombers. The author adeptly presents divergent political perspectives without overtly aligning himself, leaving readers to draw their own conclusions.

As the narrative gathers momentum, Emma races against time to extract Fadi's harrowing account of the bombing, adding another layer of intrigue to the storyline. Davies navigates deftly between past and present, revealing unforeseen facets of these protagonists. Rooted in their roles as parents, the novel adeptly underscores the lengths individuals are willing to go to uphold ethical standards, fostering a sense of familiarity within the readers' hearts.

The intricate complexities of the characters and the complicated circumstances they find themselves embroiled in render the task of choosing a side truly challenging as the story unfolds. Both Emma and Fadi emerge as enigmatic figures ensnared in a complex tapestry of circumstances that elicit profound empathy from readers, holding their attention until the final page. "Bombmaker" emerges as a critical exploration of the human psyche in the face of daunting challenges, imparting a lasting impact on readers who read this book.

The Guest by B.A. Paris was an amazing read. The story is full of secrets, murder, and interesting characters. The narrative basically goes back and forth between Iris and Gabriel, and they each have plenty of secrets. I did not see the twist coming. Laure, an old friend of the couple, comes to stay for a while when she has issues with her husband Pierre. Of course she overstays her welcome, but there is so much going on in the story other than this one issue, it simply pulls you in. You will be mesmerized by this novel. Highly recommend.

The Last Request by Brandon Barrows

The Last RequestThe Last Request by Brandon Barrows
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Brandon Barrows' gripping novel, "The Last Request," delves into the depths of classic psychological suspense, ensnaring readers in its intricate web of intrigue. Nestled within the remote confines of an Alaskan mansion, the narrative orbits around Holly Shaw and her conniving cousins, all drawn together by the magnetic allure of a staggering $60 million inheritance. The cousins themselves are not close, and this element echoes and adds a sense of remoteness to the narrative as well. However, the inheritance comes with an ominous caveat: they must remain confined within the ancestral mansion until the impending demise of their great aunt, Lydia. As a series of gruesome murders begin to unravel the serenity of their seclusion, the entire household becomes a cauldron of suspicion.

Barrows demonstrates his narrative prowess by deftly weaving a tapestry of tension, ensnaring readers in a relentless guessing game that persists until the final page. The characters are intricately nuanced, not entirely likable, with each harboring clandestine agendas, turning the narrative into a tantalizing whodunit that keeps readers on tenterhooks. The mansion's desolate locale further augments the suspense, immersing readers in the overwhelming desperation that grips the characters.

Overall, "The Last Request" offers an irresistible literary cocktail, seamlessly blending themes of guilt, greed, and temptation into a high-stakes battle for survival. A compelling read that will resonate deeply with aficionados of psychological thrillers, it offers a narrative that is as enigmatic as it is beguiling. Barrows' narrative premise, initially peculiar, grows increasingly surreal as the plot unfurls. The constant undercurrent of suspense keeps readers perpetually on their toes, thwarting their attempts to untangle the intricate web of deceit.

The numerous plot twists peppered throughout the narrative continually defy expectations, leaving readers yearning for more, page after page. While Barrows' writing is nothing short of excellent, and his storyline remains refreshingly innovative, some readers may find the denouement slightly rushed, yearning for a more languid and expansive exploration of the story's final revelations. Nevertheless, "The Last Request" stands as a testament to Barrows' mastery of the psychological thriller genre, and its labyrinthine narrative will leave an indelible mark on all who dare to embark on this chilling literary journey.

Cosmic Egg Inc.

Cosmic Egg Inc. is such a fun book to read and quite engaging. In the bustling metropolis of New York, a young man named Peter Kane, still in the early stages of his college journey as a sophomore, found himself thrust into a surreal and extraordinary narrative. His summer was initially intended to be a simple retreat with his aunt on Long Island, coupled with his earnest endeavors at a youth shelter. Little did he know that fate had other plans in store. The turning point occurred at a lavish Hamptons mansion, where Peter's life took a peculiar and unforeseeable turn. In a moment of inexplicable mystique, a shadowy figure materialized before him, bearing the weighty proclamation that he, Peter Kane, held the fate of the entire world in his hands. An enigmatic mission, one that demanded his unwavering commitment, was now entrusted to him. To aid Peter on this bewildering journey, a most peculiar companion emerged: Sam, an artificial intelligence-infused entity with a penchant for witty quips. Sam's demeanor oscillated between bossiness and the colloquial language of the bro-culture, a combination that grated on Peter's nerves. Sam himself bemoaned his programmed personality, likening it to the amalgamation of Reddit and YouTube, crafted by a bunch of nerds who slanted him toward smart-alecky, irritating wisecracks. In parallel, another man named Vernon Hines embarked on a different but equally surreal odyssey. His path to revelation came as he attempted to take his own life, only to be interrupted by a celestial presence. This otherworldly entity, remarkably resembling the iconic Morgan Freeman, imparted a monumental duty upon Vernon: the salvation of planet Earth. His guide on this divine quest was none other than Jesus himself, tasked with assisting him in the battle against an impending malevolent force. As Peter grappled with the surreal question of whether his experiences were real or if he existed within a complex computer simulation, Vernon began to question the true nature of his religious mission, discovering that reality might not align with his initial beliefs. Despite the gravity of its subject matter, this fast-paced narrative retained a lighthearted tone throughout. It navigated the intricate web of interconnected storylines, managing to maintain a semblance of grounding while delving into mind-bending possibilities. The initial portions of the novel provided an extensive foundation, setting the stage for the multifaceted layers of the scenario. However, as the story unfolded, the author skillfully injected surprises and revelations, making the latter half of the tale more accessible and engrossing. The culmination of the narrative did not fail to deliver a satisfying twist. Ultimately, readers will find themselves immersed in an engaging and whimsical science fiction tale, guided by two quite implausible heroes on their extraordinary journey to save the world.

The Secrets We Keep by M.I.Hattersley

The Secrets We Keep by M. I. Hattersley is a unique book in that it has a male protagonist who is in a dire dilemma. I really enjoyed this approach, and there is a lot of detail about Rob, making this book almost a character study. Written from the first-person perspective, Rob is a relatable character with a secret past. His marriage to Jessie is stressed, mostly due to a new baby, and the restaurant that Rob owns going through tough times. The narrative is relentless, subtly unnerving, masterfully put together, and exceptionally written. I was captivated by this book, unable to set it aside as Rob's past and secret truths inexorably steer him toward a horrible downfall. The narrative's unexpected twists culminate in an astonishing conclusion. A great read and looking forward to more from this author.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Activate Your Creativity by Ridzert Ingenegeren is such a unique book, brimming with ideas, great illustrations, and more that will get you on the path to building your creative spirit. We are truly all born with a sense of creativity, often losing that as we grow older. This book will inspire you again to activate the creativity inside you. I love how this book really breaks down the creative process for designing physical objects. Perhaps you are designing a new vase and need inspiration. This book explains just how you can get that inspiration from your surroundings, and build upon that. The concept of the SCAMPER heuristics set is so fascinating and works so well. SCAMPER is an acronym for Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Magnify/Modify, Put to Other uses, Eliminate, Rearrange/Reverse. Using this methodology will aid you in your creative process as you work on your design. A great book filled with examples and a lot of detail, I highly recommend this resource.

Centered around the enigmatic Magelord Mason and his courageous firstborn, Malkin, the narrative unfurls in a gripping battle for their throne against the elusive yet cunning Devon. But as Devon's true nature emerges, his manipulative web ensnares Malkin's loved ones, exploiting their affections and wielding the formidable Interdimensional Veils of Chaos to thwart Malkin's ascent as Magelord of Northridge. Striking a perfect balance between evocative depiction and concise narration, Christian captivates with a tale that remains engaging without falling into unnecessary wording.
