The Hungry Dark by Jen Williams

Jen Williams' latest book presents a captivating premise featuring a fake psychic with a mysterious past that resurfaces, leading her to the body of a missing child. The narrative explores the intriguing world of psychic phenomena, delving into the privacy pitfalls of social media and the ethical dilemmas faced by those exploiting vulnerable individuals. The sci-fi element of premonitions adds an extra layer of intrigue, intertwined with a present-day mystery involving a serial killer. Despite these individually compelling elements, the story's cohesion falters, hindering their full development. An entertaining read, though Ashley's family dynamics feel contrived and detract from the overall believability.

Holmes, Marple & Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First Century by James Patterson

Holmes, Marple & Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First CenturyHolmes, Marple & Poe: The Greatest Crime-Solving Team of the Twenty-First Century by James Patterson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

After years without a James Patterson read, this one intrigued me with characters named Marple, Holmes, and Poe. While enjoyable, it lacked an overarching high-stakes case, feeling more like short stories in alternating chapters. Small nods to the originals, like Baskerville the dog and receptionist Virginia, were appreciated. I favored Marple, though her age remained unclear. Holmes and Poe needed more depth beyond their interests in cars and weapons. Naming one character after Patterson himself seemed odd, and the cases lacked surprising twists. A fun but not seriously gripping read.

The Dragon Storm: Abracadabra by Anthony DiPaolo

The Dragon Storm: AbracadabraThe Dragon Storm: Abracadabra by Anthony DiPaolo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Dragon Storm: Abracadabra by Anthony DiPaolo is such a well-written book and again the author pulls you in right away in the beginning. The writing is mystical and magic, dark and dreary and simply engaging. A brilliant narrative unfolds with compelling, well-developed characters. Vivid descriptions bring each scene to life, creating an immersive reading experience. The building excitement on every page propels you forward, making it difficult to put the book down. Also of note is the art that is used along the way to further create a feeling and provide depth and nuance. You will come to love all of the characters, they're all so interesting. Once again, DiPaolo has written an engaging and noteworthy book. Recommended.
