Impeachment: A Novel by Mark Spivak

Impeachment: A NovelImpeachment: A Novel by Mark Spivak
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Impeachment: A Novel by Mark Spivak is not surprisingly quite relevant in this political age. The intersection of big corporate money and politics is not a new phenomenon but seems to pervade politics with rising influence in the current atmosphere. Spivak takes this undercurrent and turns it into an interesting story where billionaire brothers seek to influence and change or simply destroy a president. Part political commentary and part engaging fiction story, this riveting book will keep your interest while you immerse yourself in the upheaval taking place. Immigration forms the foundation as the alternate history story evolves and pulls you along. Powerful people run amok just under the surface in most of politics and this book explores what could possibly happen, and what is likely happening, even now. A great read and one that seems particularly apropos in present times. Highly recommend.

Go Do Deals: The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Buying & Selling Businesses by Jeremy Harbour is an easy to read book citing the author's own experience in buying and selling businesses. Damon Ich by Aaron D. Key

Damon IchDamon Ich by Aaron D. Key
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Damon Ich by Aaron D. Key being the second in The Wheel of Eight Book series by the author is a superbly written and well-executed fantasy novel. The author certainly has a highly descriptive way with words creating memorable scenes for the main character and imbuing him with distinctive qualities. The lyrical language is noteworthy and sets the tone for the entire book nicely. As an introvert Damon lives in his own little beautiful world, is a gardener, yet he has the ability to time travel and changes his surroundings at will. Mostly he uses his ability to help other people, but of course, in any well-written story, there are other more insidious forces at work. You will enjoy this well-paced and compelling work of literature. Few authors can combine expert characterization with a lovely fantasy story, one filled with adventure, danger, and wonder, but this author does that and more. Highly recommend.

The Ryder Code (Jack Ryder #3The Ryder Code (Jack Ryder #3 by Lawrence J. Epstein
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Ryder Code (Jack Ryder #3) by Lawrence J. Epstein is a well-written noir thriller set in New York City and features Jack Ryder, a private investigator; the year is 1943. To his surprise, while sitting in a diner, a nun walks in and asks him for help. This of course is not an everyday occurrence, but after he hears her story he agrees to take on the mission. Ryder is tasked with solving a murder that will help save and rescue Jewish children being hurt by the Nazis. While a short book, this is a well-developed plot, full of relatable characters, with solid and realistic dialogue. The book engages you right from the beginning scene, and you feel you get to know Ryder as a mere mortal, full of conflicting emotions, and not just a great investigator. He has his struggles, but always endeavors to do the right thing. This is a fine historical thriller with a substantial lead character. A great addition to an eminently readable series, this book is highly recommended.

Thirteen for Dinner by Kathleen Lopez

Thirteen for DinnerThirteen for Dinner by Kathleen Lopez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Thirteen for Dinner by Kathleen Lopez has all of the classic hallmarks of a great mystery novel, an old mansion, a dinner party, and plenty of confounding clues. The Taste of Despair (The Master of Perceptions, #3)The Taste of Despair by Darin C. Brown
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Taste of Despair (The Master of Perceptions, #3) by Darin C. Brown is a fascinating book with a relatable and unique main character in fourteen-year-old Hunter Miller. Hunter is a little different from your average fourteen-year-old in that he sees auras around people. He is also on the autism spectrum and the subject of bullying from his peers. He kind of reads people through their auras,
seeing their emotions, thoughts, and feelings. This sometimes spells trouble for Hunter as he gets bombarded with images. He even tends to get involved in situations that he shouldn't. All of this is a struggle for Hunter as he battles his inner demons and manages his seemingly magical abilities. For one thing, he can heal himself. His world changes however when his beloved Grandfather dies. Now he must come to grips with a new reality and new challenges. This is a well-researched book, well written and engaging. You develop great empathy for Hunter as he lives his life and works through various dilemmas. Highly recommend.

Dueling Fates by Stephanie M. Allen

Dueling FatesDueling Fates by Stephanie M. Allen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dueling Fates by Stephanie M. Allen is a great example of intricately detailed world-building, fully developed characters, and a strong storyline. Truly a unique book that builds on the strength of the main characters, namely Alena and Isemay who are twins but very different from each other. At the age of seventeen, they both have marriage prospects, but neither is thrilled with that idea. However, the plot moves on nicely at this point, and the story develops with plenty of tension, controversy, and unforeseen events that challenge the characters. Plenty of romance, magical fantasy, different kingdoms, and unusual creatures make this a must-read for fans of mystical fantasy. The author has done a great job in writing this novel, a deft and creative hand gives it a sense of mystery and flair. If you need a diversion from your everyday life, this is the perfect read, light, magical, and a whole lot of fun.

Median Gray by Bill Mesce Jr.

Median GrayMedian Gray by Bill Mesce Jr.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Median Gray by Bill Mesce Jr. is as rough and gritty as it gets when detailing the streets of New York in the 1980s and a quest for revenge. The story begins however in 1963 with a rookie cop walking his beat, who comes upon a messed up situation, only to get shot himself. This incident begins the rest of the story 20 years later, and what a story it is. Gritty, realistic, fully capturing the essence of New York City in the most corrupt and dismal of times. The dialogue is perfect, rough and tumble, characters so real, you can almost touch them. With rampant corruption, it's sometimes hard to know who is the good guy or bad guy here as the author sets the stage, slowly and carefully. Nonetheless, the pace picks up, the plot gives you a few twists and turns, and the characters themselves, Ronnie, Big Sid, and more are so realistically described, so authentic. Great story, a bit grim at times, but full of intrigue and excitement. This police thriller definitely packs a punch. Highly recommend.

Bay of Devils: A mystery letter from a doomed ship sparks an expedition to Alaska (Bay Mysteries Book 1) by Grahame Shannon is a great mystery story based on a historical event, the sinking of doomed Princess Sophia on the Alaska coast. A mysterious letter survives however from one of the crew, having thrown it into the water, only to be discovered years later. The letter is then delivered to the intended recipient Lizzie, 50 years later in 1968. From here the story truly begins as Lizzie hires Sean Gray, amateur detective, and sailor to mount a sailing adventure to find some lost treasure. This story is epic in nature, and replete with interesting, flawed, and fun characters. The author knows his sailing terminology, while the history makes for a compelling and fast-paced read that is both factual and intriguing. A fantastic escapade that even features a smart-aleck macaw named Ajax, you will love the variety of characters, each of them unique and who add so much to the story. Touches of humor here and there add to the fun, and the story pulls you along to a satisfying conclusion. Get ready for a fast-paced adventure on the high seas as the intrepid crew finds their way.

More than Love: A Husband's Tale by Peter B. Forster

More Than Love, A Husband's TaleMore Than Love, A Husband's Tale by Peter B. Forster
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

More Than Love, A Husband's tale by Peter B Forster is a gut-wrenching and heartache filled memoir that recounts the author's time with his wife Kay after she is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Written in journal form the author follows his stream of consciousness during the time his wife is in the hospital and ultimately her death. It is heart-rending and beautiful, fully capturing their love for each other. You feel Peter's pain as he struggles daily to endure, how complicated his emotions are, his guilt, but most importantly his love for his wife. The inclusion of poetry within the text of the journal greatly expands on the emotional time and explores more nuance than a simple memoir might contain. Not only is Peter's journey through his wife's illness explored, but he expands on that to include familial relationships as well, never forgetting how far-reaching are the effects of cancer. This is an important book that can help families grieving during a difficult time to understand they are not alone. Highly recommend.

Boot: A Sorta Novel of Vietnam by Charles L Templeton

Boot: A Sorta Novel of Vietnam by Charles L. Templeton is a riveting read about the Viet Nam war that is slightly reminiscent of Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. This book follows the stream of consciousness of its main character, G.O., or George Orwell Hill. We follow his life from the beginning of his military journey through his time in Viet Nam, and returning home, as he makes us laugh, ponder, and become entrenched in the absolute absurdity of war. The relationships between the soldiers are well described, intense, and at times serious. Rescue missions provide some solemnity, but overall the tone is rather light considering the subject, because if you can't see the irony of war, why participate in it at all? A great read, one that will illuminate your understanding of this important moment in history and its lingering effects.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Harness the Power of the Invincible Mind: Spatial Strategy to Success and Happiness by Alex Neumann is a well written self help book that will help you pull up your bootstraps and get on with life. The book begins with framing adversity in a new way, looking at examples of adversity throughout history that actually challenged mankind and allowed for progress. A good example is how crops were grown, yet when there was a drought, humans figured out how to work around that, when there are bugs or vermin in crops during storage, storage solutions were improved. These examples provide powerful examples of the human ability to overcome regardless of how pleasant we want our lives to be. The author fully shares his insights and perspectives teaching you the reader to re-frame your brain and your experience. The book encourages you to step out of your comfort zone, challenges your preconceived notions, and look at your life in a new way. Great book that introduces solid and concrete advice that is both usable and actionable. Highly recommend.

Return from SiberiaReturn from Siberia by John Shallman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Return from Siberia by John Shallman is a fascinating book that looks at the impact of immigration on families, their histories, and the cumulative effect on society as a whole. The alternating chapters between Joseph's story and John's current life make for captivating reading. The one hundred years of history in between is daunting, but nonetheless important to learn about. There are strong parallels between each life, how the history of our ancestors relates to our present circumstances, and how the impact of immigration can bring power and truth to a society that readily accepts newcomers to the American dream. The story fully captures the struggles and trials many went through, as our families worked their way to America. A very inspiring story, one that motivates, educates, and explores how our differences can unite to make us even stronger as a nation and people.

Eleven FurlongsEleven Furlongs by Tyler Mathis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eleven Furlongs by Tyler Mathis is a well-written mystery that takes place in the horse racing world. The setting is well described and the characters are fully drawn. If you know little about horse racing, this is an immersive book that combines the perfect atmosphere of that business with a mystery. A jockey by the name of Peter is offered a deal he almost can't refuse, throw a race for a substantial amount of money, or maybe not. Of course, he doesn't want to throw a race because that goes against everything he believes in. This is a great moral dilemma and provides a great backdrop for this fast-paced story. The story is melded together in such a way that it keeps you reading, there is plenty of mystique and an interesting setting and tone that keeps you engaged as you try to figure out the plot. A different kind of story that sets itself apart from the run of the mill mystery. Highly recommend.

Based on his own personal experience, the author Pushpendra Mehta has gathered together one hundred things to look for when interacting with others in his book, Observe to Unmask: 100 Small Things to Know People Better. People are rarely exactly the same in most social interactions, we have several layers of masks we present to the world. Mostly the book contains some rather interesting observations about people and their personas. How people relate to each other is endlessly fascinating and the author imbues his book with his take on tells that give away what people truly are on the inside. An interesting book and while short, it imparts some insight into the human psyche.

The Last Day of ParadiseThe Last Day of Paradise by Kiki Denis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Last Day of Paradise by Kiki Denis is a rollicking good time about a Greek teenage girl and her family. You will laugh out loud as you read this book; it is authentic, unapologetic. The small Greek community within which it takes place is as real as it gets as you learn more about each character. The family dynamic is great, some secrets come out, and it feels oh so real and untouched by propriety. Anyone who has grown up in a small town knows that it is virtually impossible to keep a secret, that's what makes this book so delicious, that authenticity, with a Mediterranean slant. Over the top funny, you will remember this book long after you finish, and look back on it fondly, and maybe even re-read it again. Highly recommend.

Goodbye Homeboy: How My Students Drove Me Crazy and Inspired a Movement is one of the most inspirational stories you will ever read. A pivotal moment in the author's life changed the trajectory of his life, along with the lives of his future students. This is a great memoir that shows the tremendous influence a teacher can have and in this case, the influence is massive, as the author challenged his students to think outside their restrictive boxes. This book is both funny and at times intense, but the net result is that countless students were positively changed and given opportunities they might not otherwise have had if it weren't for Mariotto and his Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. This is a must-read book, one that both inspires but sets an optimistic tone for the future of teaching and business. Highly recommend.

Wraith: Garbageman Book Three by Erik Dean is a great continuation of this series. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, do so, they are that good. This is a well put together book with entertaining and hardcore characters as well as a plot that keeps you guessing. The protagonists stick together as they join forces to root out evil. While some of the characters may seem shallow, pretty much black and white renditions of good and evil, this is still a great read and one that keeps you interested. Plenty of obstacles come up in the story and there is an abundance of challenges that must be overcome, keeping this story appealing. The fantasy aspect is well rendered and will appeal to those readers who enjoy that especially. Overall, an enticing read and one that will keep you up at night. Highly recommend.

The Adventures of Fawn: 'Til the Last Snowflake Falls by Al E. Boy is truly a delightful book for older kids that builds off of the fanciful characters of Comet and Vixen, the famous reindeer. Fawn is their child, quite young, and is ready to experience life beyond Santa's village. This is a true coming of age story rendered in a thoughtful and engaging way. The writing makes all of the characters seem quite real, they are imbued with human emotion and feeling, even though they are animals. Fawn manages to have a lot of adventures many of which are fun and exciting, but some that are dangerous and challenging too. Add to this tale, the charming illustrations, and you have a lovely book that will capture an older child's interest as they continue to read more expressive themes. Highly recommend.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Scars of the Past: A Wounded Warrior Novel (Oak Creek by B.K. Stubblefield is a great book, number three in the series, but can easily be read as a standalone. Reid and Keira are the main characters and are fully fleshed out, each with their own heartbreaking pasts. Reid lost a leg due to an explosion in war, along with two of his friends. His physical scars may have healed, but he still has emotional scars. When he meets Keira, he's unsure if he can dive into a relationship. The story progresses nicely from the beginning pages, is sensitive to the subject matter, and addresses PTSD in a realistic manner. Some may find this challenging to read about, but overall this is a well-written book with relatable characters, a strong storyline, a small-town vibe, and a plot that pulls you in and gets you involved as the reader. The Res: An American Love Story by G. Michael Madison

The Res: An American Love StoryThe Res: An American Love Story by G. Michael Madison
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Rez: An American Love Story by G. Michael Madison is a riveting story and one that touches on a part of America that is not often written about, an Indian reservation. The bulk of the story takes place in the '60s and '70s, a tumultuous time everywhere. Based on the experiences of the author, the three main characters are Johnny, Caj, and Nikki-D, whose life experiences, as depicted, are sobering, maddening, and a reminder of human cruelty and judgment in the form of racism, stereotyping, and class structure. This is a riveting and emotional book, one that resonates on many levels. The concurrent story of Little Mouse is in and of itself quite intriguing, and a clever literary device. Overall a fascinating look at society and its influence on young lives. Highly recommend.

Terror Trip by Delaney Landon

Terror TripTerror Trip by Delaney Landon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Terror Trip by Delaney Landon is a thrill ride in the truest sense. A group of people is on a train together, but each has their own perspective on what goes down as the story unfolds. Told from alternating points of view, each character shares their version of events, this approach being quite illuminating. Backgrounds are revealed, personalities are developed, and the story moves forward in this unusual way. There is a deep foreboding sense in this book, the train becoming the backdrop for tension between groups, a divide that ensnares the inhabitants of the train, one that culminates brilliantly. There is good attention paid to the differences in language used by the characters, setting them apart from each other, while also explaining their cultural differences. This is a nuanced book, almost conversational in a way, but riveting. Highly recommend for a truly unique reading experience.

The Night Drop by Ian D. Wright

The Night DropThe Night Drop by Ian D. Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Night Drop: Resistance in the Marshlands by Ian D. Wright is a fascinating historical book. The book opens with a gripping scene and the story takes off. The story is about World War II with both the British and French perspective and is an adept mystery filled with historical detail. The marshland itself is wonderfully described with cottages and small homes that sound so cozy, but also harbor secrets and controversy. The story unfolds in the year of 1943, then jumps to the year 1965, giving us a glimpse into the story as it evolves from simply a war saga to a more personal and engaging story as two investigative journalists help Jack figure out who the traitor is from years before during the war. Totally immersive, filled with well fleshed out characters and a gripping plot, this book is one that you won't want to miss. Highly recommend for an exciting and educational historical read.

Time's Musicians by Mark Paul Oleksiw

Time's MusiciansTime's Musicians by Mark Paul Oleksiw
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Time's Musicians by Mark Paul Oleksiw is a fascinating story. This is a coming of age story as we follow Billy, first in the 5th grade when he meets an interesting boy who believes in black holes, then in later years at camp, and finally as an adult. There are flawless and compelling descriptions in this tale whether it is in describing a setting or delving into Billy's mind. The language of the book is thoughtful and provocative capturing your attention as the reader. The world the characters inhabit is magical if a bit unsettling, especially Billy's world. With the slow unraveling of the plot, you are kept engaged by subtle twists and turns, never quite knowing what to believe. Very much a character-driven story, this is a book you won't soon forget, and one you may want to read again for further clarity and further nuance. Highly recommend.

Haskell Himself by Gary Seigel

Haskell HimselfHaskell Himself by Gary Seigel
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Haskell Himself by Gary is an unputdownable coming of age story with an LGBT twist. Haskell is a 16-year-old kid growing up in the sixties. Even with the sexual revolution going on, he is struggling to find his place as a gay young man. He's already had a modicum of success, as a former child star but wants more from life. Added to his own complicated path is the fact that his mother takes off, leaving Haskell with his aunt. This book is a great story, an expose' of the culture at the time, and interesting to read. Emotional upheaval and conflicting emotions feature prominently in this story, giving it a relatable edge. You can relate to Haskell's struggles. Issues like bullying are also tackled, making this a relevant novel, even today. Highly recommend.

Half- Cut by Arnold Eslava Grunwaldt

Half-Cut (The Cut Series Book 1)Half-Cut by Arnold Eslava-Grunwaldt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great first installment to this up and coming series, Half-Cut (The Cut Series Book 1) by Arnold Eslava-Grunwaldt is a fast-paced book with a realistic edge. The protagonist is Hamilcar or "Ham" Hitchcock; he's the lead detective on unusual murders going down in Yonkers. Heads on the victims are shaven half-way, creating a distinct signature for what might be a serial killer. The style here is natural, gritty, authentic, and you feel you are there in New York. Great characters, strong plot, and crazy killings make this an eminently readable book and an exciting first book in this new series. Plenty of twists and turns add to the pace and solid writing. Highly recommend for a strongly written police procedural thriller.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Colors by J.M. Ferreira is a brilliantly written book about Pua and her struggle to find herself and her identity. The writing is evocative and thoughtful. The setting is lush and well described. Hawaii opens up in this novel in new ways, revelatory ways that never were thought of before. The description of the homeless camp on the remote beach makes it feel like home, it is cozy and strangely comforting. The family relationships are finely tuned and immensely challenging for Pua. This is a fascinating and beautifully written book, more on the level of literature than just a novel. Thought-provoking and memorable, this book is highly recommended.
