Return From Siberia by John Shallman

Return from SiberiaReturn from Siberia by John Shallman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Return from Siberia by John Shallman is a fascinating book that looks at the impact of immigration on families, their histories, and the cumulative effect on society as a whole. The alternating chapters between Joseph's story and John's current life make for captivating reading. The one hundred years of history in between is daunting, but nonetheless important to learn about. There are strong parallels between each life, how the history of our ancestors relates to our present circumstances, and how the impact of immigration can bring power and truth to a society that readily accepts newcomers to the American dream. The story fully captures the struggles and trials many went through, as our families worked their way to America. A very inspiring story, one that motivates, educates, and explores how our differences can unite to make us even stronger as a nation and people.

Eleven Furlongs by Tyler Mathis

Eleven FurlongsEleven Furlongs by Tyler Mathis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Eleven Furlongs by Tyler Mathis is a well-written mystery that takes place in the horse racing world. The setting is well described and the characters are fully drawn. If you know little about horse racing, this is an immersive book that combines the perfect atmosphere of that business with a mystery. A jockey by the name of Peter is offered a deal he almost can't refuse, throw a race for a substantial amount of money, or maybe not. Of course, he doesn't want to throw a race because that goes against everything he believes in. This is a great moral dilemma and provides a great backdrop for this fast-paced story. The story is melded together in such a way that it keeps you reading, there is plenty of mystique and an interesting setting and tone that keeps you engaged as you try to figure out the plot. A different kind of story that sets itself apart from the run of the mill mystery. Highly recommend.
