One of You by Claire McGowan

There’s nothing quite like a weekend getaway that turns into a murder investigation, and Claire McGowan makes the most of this deliciously uncomfortable setup. I always look forward to her new books and this one is no exception. Sophie’s hen weekend at her fiancé’s family estate in Ireland is supposed to be a celebration, but with old friends harboring resentments, a less-than-welcoming future sister-in-law, and an unexpected guest from her past, the atmosphere is anything but festive. When someone turns up dead, the weekend takes a much darker turn. Detective Sergeant Aoife Hanlon must sort through a collection of secrets, jealousy, and old betrayals to figure out which of the guests is capable of murder. I really enjoyed the premise of this one. A remote estate, a group of women with complicated histories, and the uneasy feeling that nobody is telling the whole truth make for an entertaining mystery. McGowan does a nice job building suspicion and keeping the reader guessing as the layers of these relationships begin to unravel. I particularly liked the underlying tension between the guests and the way past grievances complicate the search for the truth. There's an unsettled quality to the story that kept me reading. If you enjoy locked-room mysteries, unreliable characters, and plenty of secrets hiding beneath seemingly ordinary friendships, this is an entertaining thriller worth picking up. It's a reminder that sometimes the people closest to us are the ones we know the least. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
