Peck & Peck : A Novel by Bonnie Garmus
A poetry magazine, feuding twin editors, thirty-nine opinionated editors, and a company policy that involves incinerating bad writing? Sign me up! Bonnie Garmus takes us to 1982 New York, where Batter Gray is fresh out of college, drowning in student loans, and folding T-shirts at the Gap. His talent for recognizing great poetry hasn't exactly paid the bills, but a job at prestigious Peck & Peck promises to change everything. What could possibly go wrong? Well, apparently, quite a lot!
I love the premise of this literary circus, where originality is everything, mediocrity is practically a criminal offense, and office politics could give a Shakespearean tragedy a run for its money. The feuding Peck twins alone sound like a recipe for delicious chaos, while Batter's entry into this bizarre literary world promises plenty of laughs and surprises.
My verdict: Garmus appears to have a wicked sense of humor about the literary establishment. For anyone who's ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of highbrow publishing, this sounds like one wonderfully entertaining paper chase!
