Book Review: The Storm by Rachel Hawkins

Rachel Hawkins’ The Storm is a Southern Gothic thriller that pulls you in from the first page. Set in the small town of St. Medard’s Bay, Alabama, the story centers on the Rosalie Inn—a historic spot with plenty of secrets tucked behind its charming facade.

The novel follows Geneva Corliss, the inn’s owner, who’s juggling the inn’s decline and her own personal struggles. Things get even more complicated when August Fletcher, a writer researching a decades-old murder, arrives at the inn with Gloria “Lo” Bailey—the woman accused of killing her lover during Hurricane Marie in 1984. Their return stirs up old tensions and long-buried secrets, setting the stage for some seriously tense moments.

Hawkins does a great job with a dual-timeline narrative, moving between the present-day investigation and flashbacks to the 1984 events. The story’s suspense builds naturally, and the hurricane looming over everything feels like a perfect metaphor for the chaos in the characters’ lives.

With a rich setting, twists that keep you guessing, and characters you actually care about, The Storm is an atmospheric, page-turning read. Fans of suspense and Southern Gothic will definitely want to dive in.
